LEARN WITH THE CGA

An in-depth understanding of the science of gemmology and how it applies to all aspects of the gem and jewellery trade.

Select your preferred learning path: an intensive full-day course to become a qualified gemmologist within a year, or part-time course over two years.

For classes in Toronto the course notes and lab manual can now be ordered for an extra fee in both Chinese Traditional or Chinese Simplified upon request .

The Canadian Gemmological Association is registered as a Career College under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.
The programs listed on this page are approved as vocational programs under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005. As such, there are certain requirements, including admission requirements – please see below for details.

Admission Requirements

The following are considered equivalent to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD):

  1. The Candidate must be 18 years of age or older and pass a qualifying test that has been approved by the superintendent OR Provide
  2. A secondary school graduation diploma from any other Canadian province or territory or from the United States.
  3. A General Education Development (GED) certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory or from the United States that was issued on or before May 02, 2024.
  4. A Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory  that has been issued on or after May 03, 2024.
  5. A transcript, diploma or certificate from another country, assessed at an Ontario OSSD level by a recognized assessment service.  This is an assessment you are responsible for getting and paying for.
  6. A Canadian post secondary diploma or degree.
  7. A non-Canadian post secondary diploma or degree that has been assessed as equivalent to a Canadian post secondary diploma or degree by a recognized assessment service. This is an assessment you are responsible for getting and paying for.
  8. A certificate of completion for an Ontario academic upgrading program that is accepted by an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology for entry into an Ontario post secondary program (Ontario Basic Skills Level IV, Basic Training and Skills Development Level IV).
  9. A Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification in any trade from Ontario or other Canadian jurisdiction.

Applicants who cannot provide credentials meeting any of the above-listed requirements have the option to complete and pass a mature student test. The CGA uses the Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam. Please phone the office for details.

Full-Time Option:

Become a qualified gemmologist in just 4 months. This is the most efficient option for those needing to put their training into action as soon as possible.

Accelerated Professional Gemmology

Duration: 310 Hours over 16 weeks
Deposit with registration: $500
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent (read more above)
Passing Grade: 67%
Credential Awarded: Career College Accelerated Professional Gemmology certificate for successful completion.

Students may elect to write the CGA Fellowship examinations upon successful completion

  • The nature of gems
  • Fundamental scientific concepts applicable to gem studies
    • Crystallography & crystalline substance
    • Physical properties of gems, including hardness, specific gravity, cleavage & fracture
    •  Optics and optical properties of gems, including the nature of light, colour, polarization of light, dichroism, refraction, birefringence, lustre, dispersion, spectra
  • How to use small gemmological instruments (loupe, dichroscope, Chelsea filter)
  • Introduction to synthetic and imitation gemstones
  • Gem cutting and cut styles (including diamond)
  • Introduction to gem species (including non-mineral gems) – nature & properties
  • Chemistry & Atomic Structure of Minerals
  • Colour, Refraction & Birefringence in Gems
  • The Refractometer and Other Methods of Estimating the R.I. of Gemstones
  • Dispersion & Special Effects Detected in Gemstones, The Gemmological Microscope
  • X-Rays & Luminescence
  • The Spectroscope
  • Advanced Crystallography
  • Methods of Producing Synthetic Gem Materials
  • Synthetic Diamond & Diamond Simulants
  • Imitations & Gemstone Enhancements

Part-time Option:

The full professional gemmology program is divided into two parts – Gemmology Basics and Professional Gemmology that must be completed sequentially, each taking roughly eight months.

Gemmology Basics (First Year)

Duration: 90 Hours over 35 Weeks.

Passing Grade: 67%
Credential Awarded: Career College Gemmology Basics certificate for successful completion.

Course Content:

Passing Grade: 67%
Credential Awarded: Career College Professional Gemmology certificate for successful completion.

    Vocational courses are post-secondary programs approved under Ontario Career Colleges Act 2005. Enrolment contracts, refund policies, admission requirements and documentation are regulated under the Act.

    CGA Policy Sexual Misconduct By CGA Employees In Relation To A Student

    To Enrol:

    1. All applicants are requested to contact the office or attend an open house session before submitting payment.
    2. Download the applicable registration form, complete and sign in all places indicated.
      1. This is an Adobe fillable form and can be completed on your computer and saved under a new name using the free Adobe Reader application.
      2. “Typewritten” signatures are not accepted, even if embedded in an Adobe digital signature.
    3. Download the Career College Student Rights and the Student Complaint & Expulsion policy, and Sexual Harassment policy documentation from the table above. Read and acknowledge receipt by ticking the boxes on your enrolment form. The Fee Refund Policy is embedded in the enrolment contract.
    4. Attach proof of Ontario high school graduation or equivalent in any of the following forms:
      1. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and pass a qualifying test that has been approved by the superintendent OR Provide
      2. A copy of your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or official transcript
      3. Documentation demonstrating a post-secondary degree in Canada or the USA
      4. Secondary school diplomas from other Canadian provinces and from high schools in the USA are accepted as equivalent to the OSSD. (These can be considered as an OSSD equivalent: A General Education Development (GED) certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory or from the United States that was issued on or before May 02, 2024. A Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory that has been issued on or after May 03, 2024).
      5. Prospective students who have completed high school outside Canada or the US should contact the CGA office. Credentials issued in languages other than English require an official translation into English.
      6. Candidates who do not meet the OSSD or equivalent criteria may be required to pass a separate admission test.
    5. Submit forms by any of the following methods:
      1. Email forms that have been completed on the computer and digitally signed
      2. Scan or take a photo and email forms completed manually
      3. Fax forms to the fax number on the form
      4. Print and mail the form to the address indicated on the enrolment form
    6. Submit payment. (Call or email the office to notify when it should be expected).
      1. Acceptable forms are VISA, Mastercard or PayPal through the CGA online store, or personal cheque, bank draft or money order.
      2. Cash is NOT accepted for payments greater than $250.
      3. If paying by cheque and the cheque is returned NSF you will be charged a $50.00 NSF charge.

    Tax Receipts

    Students enrolled in these programs receive T2202A Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificates in February of each year for income tax deduction purposes.
